Down by the Riverside!

RiversideTwo missionaries, Paul and Silas, arrived in Philippi according to Acts 16. As was normal for them, they immediately looked for the synagogue or the place of worship. Since they could not find one, they ended up down by the riverside (Acts 16:13), where there was a prayer meeting going on.

Well, Paul and Silas did what they knew to do; they witnessed to the people of the power and love of Jesus Christ. As they witnessed, Lydia, one of the members of this small prayer group, became a believer after she heard about Jesus and His sacrificial death.

So this passage of Scripture talks about three people: Paul, Silas, and Lydia. I believe these three can resemble so many of us.

The Paul’s and Silas’ have a personal relationship with God and a strong desire to be a witness, and the Lydia’s have a strong hunger and desire to know more about God or to experience Him in a more real, personal way. Where did these three meet? Down by the river!

So what are we waiting for?  If you are waiting for an open door to witness, could your open door be where you are today? Instead of a pulpit or podium, it may be a rock near the riverside or the chair in your office or the table in the break room or the customer in your line or the sales rep. on the phone. You may be like Lydia and have a driving hunger for more of God, so where do you go to meet God? How about right where you are

I love this story in Acts 16. Either we are a witness, or we are in need of a witness. And where does that happen? Right where we are. I thank God for the pulpits, the podiums, and the pews, but I also thank God that He is not limited to those.

Last week in a devotional, a lady asked Jesus a question. She asked, “Where do we go to worship or to meet God?” Jesus said to her “…Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. (John 4:21, 23)

Father, help us today to be a witness where we are. Father, help us today to see You where we are. Thank You, Father, for helping us to understand that You are not limited to certain places, but You are everywhere.

2 Corinthians 3:17 “Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”
